In our first segment on mentoring Why Mentoring Matters More Than Ever we learned how we help our communities and can change the world. For this installment I want to focus on the power of paying it forward and how women mentoring women is a small action, but its impact can be immense. Have you heard of the “butterfly effect”? It’s the concept that small actions, like a butterfly flapping its wings, can lead to big changes in the world.
By sharing knowledge and experiences, female mentorship can pave the way for female empowerment and success. We will discuss the importance of mentorship, the benefits for both the mentee and mentor, and how to build a community of women supporting women. Additionally, we will provide real-life examples of successful female mentorship and offer tips on how to find or become a mentor. The power of women mentoring women is undeniable, and when we keep paying it forward we reach far beyond our individual spheres.,
BENEFITS FOR THE MENTEE
Being mentored by another woman can provide a wealth of benefits for the mentee. For starters, a mentor who has been through similar experiences and challenges can offer valuable insights and guidance. This can help the mentee navigate difficult situations and make informed decisions. Additionally, a good mentor can provide the mentee with opportunities to learn new skills and develop personally and professionally.
One of the most significant benefits of being mentored by a woman is the boost in confidence it can provide. When a mentor believes in and supports their mentee, it can make all the difference in their level of self-assurance. This, in turn, can motivate the mentee to take risks and reach their full potential. Mentoring relationships can also expand the mentee’s network and help them build connections in their industry.
BENEFITS FOR THE MENTOR
Mentoring isn’t just beneficial for the mentee; it’s also advantageous for the mentor. By mentoring other women, mentors can gain a sense of fulfillment by giving back to their community and helping others achieve their goals. Women who mentor can also improve their leadership skills and gain new perspectives by working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
When women take on a mentoring role, they can also expand their own network and build connections with other professionals in their industry. This can lead to new opportunities and collaborations that they may not have had access to otherwise. Additionally, mentoring provides an opportunity for mentors to reflect on their own experiences and learn from their mentees, further enhancing their professional development.
BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN
By mentoring others, women can expand their reach and connect with like-minded professionals in various fields. This can help them discover new opportunities for collaboration and personal development. But mentoring doesn’t have to be a one-on-one experience. When women come together to support each other, they can create a community that fosters growth and promotes success.
Building this network of women supporting women requires a willingness to share knowledge, experiences, and resources. It means being open to learning from others as well as giving back. Women can create this community by attending networking events, joining professional organizations, and participating in online forums. By actively engaging in these spaces, women can establish meaningful relationships with other women in their respective fields.
I honestly believe that the biggest area that women can mentor other women is as wives and mothers. I am an insurance professional who went to college, networked with other insurance professionals and have read numberous books on insurance. But when it comes to being a wife and mom, it seems like my biggest resource for learning are women that have walked through the same experience and are just a little further ahead than I am. There’s no college degree offered in marriage and parenting so most of my learning has come from other women.
HOW TO FIND OR BECOME A MENTOR
If you’re interested in finding a mentor or becoming one, there are several steps you can take to cultivate these relationships. First and foremost, it’s important to identify what you’re looking for in a mentorship. Are you seeking guidance on a specific skill or industry? Or are you looking for someone to provide more general career advice and support? Are you looking for a way to care for your child who has a disability from another mom who’s been through the same?
Once you’ve identified your goals, start networking and building relationships with other women. Attend industry events and conferences, join relevant online groups or forums, join a playgroup or an organization such as Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) and reach out to women you admire. Don’t be afraid to ask for a coffee meeting or informational interview – most people are happy to share their experiences and insights with others.
When seeking out potential mentors, look for mentors who have different backgrounds and experiences than your own, as these individuals can provide unique perspectives and insights that can broaden your understanding and help you navigate new challenges.
If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, start by identifying your strengths and areas of expertise. Consider volunteering with local organizations or industry groups to offer your skills and expertise to those who may benefit from it. You can also seek out opportunities to mentor others through your workplace or alma mater.
GETTING STARTED
Regardless of whether you’re seeking a mentor or looking to become one, remember that mentorship is a two-way street. Be sure to approach these relationships with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow from one another. With the right guidance and support, you can achieve your goals and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.,
Women mentoring women is a game-changing tool that has the potential to create positive change globally. As we have seen, female mentorship has many benefits for both the mentor and the mentee. It can help women have access to more opportunities, build stronger networks, and gain valuable insights and experiences. By cultivating communities of women supporting women we can inspire more women to become mentors and mentees. Now is the time to start paying it forward and create a world where women can thrive. Helen Keller said “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. Together we can change the world, one mentorship at a time.
Go grab the power of paying it forward!
