It’s that time of year when everyone is setting goals and resolutions for the upcoming year! We all know the statistics about how quickly New Year’s resolutions are broken, but that doesn’t stop us from trying to better ourselves. So how can we set lasting goals? Read on to find out.
Setting Goals for Different Roles in Your Life
One book that has helped me set goals for the past 15-20 years is Your Best Year Yet by Jinny Ditzler. She suggests setting goals for each of the different roles in your life and then choosing one role to focus on. I typically choose an area that will affect all my other goals, such as growing my faith or personal health and wellness. My roles include wife, mom/grandma, Account Manager (my profession), Christian woman, CEO of my mind and body, friend, etc.

It’s important to note that the roles in your life may differ from mine. You may have different responsibilities, priorities, and passions. That’s why it’s crucial to identify your roles and set goals accordingly. For instance, if you’re a student, your roles may include learner, friend, family member, athlete, or musician. Each of these roles can have specific goals that align with your values, vision, and mission.
When setting goals for different roles in your life, it’s essential to make them SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This means that your goals should be clear, quantifiable, realistic, meaningful, and have a deadline. For example, instead of setting a vague goal like “be healthier,” you can set a SMART goal like “walk for 30 minutes every day for the next 30 days.”
By setting goals for different roles in your life, you can have a sense of purpose, direction, and accomplishment. You can also prioritize your time, energy, and resources based on what matters most to you. Remember, setting and achieving goals is a process, not an event. You may encounter obstacles, setbacks, and distractions along the way, but as long as you stay committed to your goals, you can make progress and enjoy the journey.
Let’s Get Started!
The most important aspect is to write everything down! Even if you only read what you write a few times after you do it, just the act of writing ingrains in your mind how serious you are, which increases your chances of success. I write down 2-3 goals for each role to get myself thinking about what I want to work on. Then, I select a total of 8-10 goals to focus on for the year.
Next, I write out daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to help me achieve these goals. I may not write out a to-do list each day, but I do take some time every day to plan out what I need to accomplish.
Once you have written down your goals and tasks, it’s important to stick to them. You can set reminders on your phone or computer to keep yourself on track. It’s also helpful to review your progress regularly, such as every month or every quarter, to see what’s working and what’s not.
Another tip is to break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This not only makes the goal seem less daunting, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task.
Remember, goal-setting is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing process that requires dedication and effort. But the rewards are worth it – setting and achieving goals can lead to increased confidence, motivation, and a sense of purpose.
Accountability
My sister, cousin, and I go on a girls trip every other year. At the end of those trips, we talk about our goals for ourselves when we got home. We decided to check in with each other each week to see how we were doing. Every Friday afternoon, I send out a group text reminding them it’s our check-in time, and we report back what we did well that week and what didn’t go so well. It’s a fun way to connect with each other and also know that we have some accountability and support.
Having accountability is an important factor in achieving our goals. When we have someone to answer to, it motivates us to stay on track and follow through on our commitments. This is why having an accountability partner or group can be so helpful.
Not only do they provide us with encouragement and support, but they can also offer valuable feedback and insights. When we share our progress with others, it allows us to reflect on our actions and make adjustments if necessary.
Accountability can take many forms, from a simple check-in text to a more structured meeting or system. Finding what works best for you and your accountability partners is key. Whatever the method, the important thing is to stick with it and hold each other accountable.
In the end, having accountability can be the difference between reaching our goals and falling short. So find your accountability partners and start working towards your dreams together.
We’re Ready to Go!
To get you started, I’ll share one of my goals for 2024: For the past few years I have really struggled with not only gaining weight but also other minor health and fitness issues like high blood pressure, achy joints and trouble sleeping. I finally had an answered prayer and stumbled upon a program designed for women over 40 that has really worked for me. So my biggest goal in 2024 is to lose the last 15 pounds to meet my goal. But then lose another 10 as kind of a vanity goal of getting fit and have the strength and flexibility I’ve wanted for so many years now.
So what are your goals? To help you out we have a special bonus for you! We’ve put together Make Your 2024 Personal Growth Simple Action Plan to give you step by step instructions making your goals a reality. I want 2024 to be the year you not just survive but THRIVE!
Best wishes for a wonderful New Year!
